Message from Chancellor Carol L. Folt: Understanding HB2

We are writing to update you on our efforts to understand and address the effects of House Bill 2 that was passed by the NC General Assembly and signed by Gov. Pat McCrory on Wednesday, March 23.

Dear Campus Community,

We are writing to update you on our efforts to understand and address the effects of House Bill 2 that was passed by the NC General Assembly and signed by Gov. Pat McCrory on Wednesday, March 23.  Since then, we’ve heard from a great many students, staff and faculty, both those who support the legislation and many who have concerns and questions about the impact of this bill on our University community.  What is absolutely clear is that many in our community, particularly those identifying as LGBTQ, are experiencing a great deal of uncertainty, hurt, anger and fear.

This legislation has raised many questions for our campus community for which we’re seeking answers.   And because this is a system-wide issue, we’re working with the General Administration to determine what it all means.  But while we have yet to find answers for every question, we want to assure you that the Provost’s Office, Office of Student Affairs, Office of University Counsel, Office of Human Resources, and the Equal Opportunity and Compliance Office are working together to understand all the implications of this law, to chart how it will affect us, and to find the right path forward.

What hasn’t changed is the greatest strength of this place:  the good people who come here every day to live, learn and work.  We are committed to ensuring that everyone is treated with dignity and respect and that no one fears for their safety or is made to feel unwelcome. And we remain committed to continue to work hard to find ways to address the needs of all our students, faculty, staff and visitors to our campus.

We’ll communicate with you as much as we can throughout this process.  In response to inquiries about the locations of single occupancy bathrooms on campus, please click here. The Equal Opportunity and Compliance Office and the LGBTQ Center are also available to provide assistance.

Sincerely,

Carol L. Folt

Chancellor
