News & Messages
Dear Carolina Community:
In the days since my last message to you, I have been made aware of – and read for myself – examples of heated conversations inside and outside of Carolina regarding many of the issues I addressed: the integrity of our support for student-athletes and their success from admission to graduation. I closed that email by saying, “Whether we agree or disagree, we must welcome healthy debate, respect each other and in that way show the true character of our Carolina community.”
Today, I am asking for a renewed effort by everyone, regardless of your opinions, to encourage civil debate and discourse about these complex issues. I hope that we can talk about these topics in an informed way without resorting to personal attacks directed at students, faculty or staff members. Carolina character lives in our words and deeds.
Sincerely,
Carol L. Folt
Chancellor
"At this year’s University Day, we are focusing on that second vital calling: research. I think of that famous Charles Kuralt line, “what is it that binds us to this place?” We are the university of the people, and that mission unites us around a common purpose. But the glue that binds us is a curiosity about the world – a desire to learn and to know more. That curiosity finds its purest expression in research, pushing the boundaries of human knowledge."
"Class of 2022, thank you. For your sacrifices, your achievements, your embodiment of all that Carolina is meant to be. Congratulations!"
