A Message from Chancellor Search Committee Chair Wade Hargrove

Dear Carolina faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends,

Securing a worthy successor to Chancellor Thorp is the highest priority for the University’s Board of Trustees. Carolina’s 11th Chancellor will be expected to embrace and build upon the University’s 200- year commitment to excellence in all that it does.

A 21-member committee, representative of various constituencies of the University, is launching a national search to identify the most qualified person to lead the University into the 21st century. The committee includes members of the University’s Board of Trustees, students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community leaders. This is a challenging time for public higher education in general and for the University, and the task of identifying the University’s next leader is, indeed, daunting.

The committee will hold public forums on campus and seek input from the University community, alumni, and the general public on the personal and professional qualities necessary for Carolina’s next chancellor. Information about the public forums will be posted on this website, and it is the committee’s hope that interested parties will participate. Those who cannot attend the forums are encouraged to email the search committee at chancellorsearch@unc.edu.

The search committee’s objective is to identify and recommend the very best candidates to the full Board of Trustees, which, in turn, will submit at least two candidates to UNC President Tom Ross for consideration by the UNC Board of Governors. The committee hopes to accomplish this task in a timely manner and to have a new Chancellor in place by July 1, 2013.

Thank you for your interest in and support of Carolina.

Sincerely,

Wade Hargrove, Chair
UNC Board of Trustees and the
Chancellor Search Committee
